Respiratory Health in Dubai: Coping With Dust and Pollen
Dubai's geography makes it one of the most challenging environments for respiratory health in the world. Fine desert particulate matter (PM2.5), year-round construction dust, traffic emissions, and seasonal pollen from date palms and grasses combine to create an airborne burden that strains even healthy lungs. For the roughly one in four UAE residents who live with asthma or chronic allergic rhinitis, summer and spring can be genuinely dangerous months.
Shamal winds — the north-westerly gusts common between June and August — lift enormous quantities of fine sand and dust from the Arabian interior. On high-dust days, outdoor PM2.5 concentrations can exceed WHO safe-day limits by a factor of ten. During these periods, anyone with asthma, COPD, or chronic bronchitis should reduce outdoor exposure and ensure their rescue inhaler is within reach at all times.
Indoors is not automatically safer. Air conditioning units that are not serviced regularly recirculate dust, mould spores, and bacteria. We recommend professional duct cleaning every 12–18 months and replacement of HVAC filters every three months for households with respiratory patients.
For patients whose symptoms have changed — increased frequency of rescue-inhaler use, waking at night with coughing, or reduced exercise tolerance — we recommend a spirometry test and an updated allergy panel. Both are available at our Deira branch without a referral. Managing your respiratory health proactively means far fewer emergency-department visits and a significantly better quality of life year-round.
